History and Highlights:

Tradewinds Foundation for Cerebral Palsy was the brainchild of founder David Abelove. In 1997, after the personal experience of donating two of his vessels and serving on the board of Cerebral Palsy, Dave had the idea of developing boating programs for children and adults at risk, and of raising money for Cerebral Palsy. This opened the door to begin Tradewinds, an organization that has already exceeded his expectations.

Tradewinds buys and sells boats through the "bargain sale" donation process, a fully IRS sanctioned method of donating tangible property to non-profit charities for beneficial tax purposes. (To learn more about the many financial and other benefits involved in this process, visit the Tradewinds website devoted to giving a detailed explanation and actual example of the "Bargain Sale", at http://www.donateyourboat.com ). With funds generated from this process, Tradewinds runs boating programs in New York, Florida and California. Children from Cerebral Palsy, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and other organizations participate in educational boating excursions that are fun yet challenging.

"Bargain Sale" Example:

When we offer a "Bargain Sale" cash offer for your vessel, you will be pleasantly surprised at the financial outcome. Here is an example of an approximate selling transaction valued between $100,000 and $125,000. (The appraisal value is established at $125,000 due to accessories, location, etc.)

The following formula would be applied by Tradewinds:

$125,000 Appraised Value

$ 75,000 Cash Offered by Tradewinds

= $ 50,000 Gross Tax Benefit

Multiply tax benefit amount by State and Federal tax bracket. (For purpose of this offer we have used a 45% bracket.) =

$22,500 Net Tax Benefit

+ $75,000 Cash Offered By Tradewinds

= $ 97,500 Total Net Benefit To You!

Outcomes/Results:

  1. Over 200 vessels have been donated to support this effort. Examples are:
    • 1996 65' Hatteras Motor Yacht
    • 1988 72' Salthouse Brothers Motorsailor
    • 1995 50' Viking Sportfish
    • 1985 60' Nautor Swan Sail
  2. Brokers and Donors appreciate the opportunity Tradewinds provides
  3. Confidence, self-esteem, and an incredible camaraderie for kids in programs
  4. Funding of the new Tradewinds Education Center for Cerebral Palsy

The Tradewinds Foundation Education Center in Upstate New York is a new facility made possible by the use of revenues generated from "bargain sale" boat donations. The new facility houses educational programs for children and adults, ages six through twenty. Those struggling with physical, emotional and behavioral disabilities receive quality education and services in a supportive, structured and nurturing environment. The new building has a full gym, two kitchens, classrooms and art rooms, and the technologies used in physical, occupational and speech therapies. Yachtsman, boaters, and yacht brokers who have participated in vessel donations through Tradewinds can feel proud of all that this new facility will make possible.

Acknowledgements:

David Abelove, Tradewinds President, for putting so much of himself and his resources into this creative and compassionate venture.

Louis Tehan, Executive Director of UCP in Utica, NY, and everyone at UCP for their enthusiastic participation.

The many Yacht Brokers who have thought to share the Tradewinds vision with potential boat donors and buyers.

Boaters who have taken the time to learn about the "bargain sale donation" process and discovered how easily they can benefit young people while achieving their own goals in buying and selling their vessel.

The many professional program presenters on various topics like: boating safety, fishing, marine biology and weather, and boating navigation who have given of their time and enthusiastically shared their passion with the young people in the Tradewinds programs.

Reflections from Givers and Receivers:

Matt DiNardo, Utica, NY TV weatherman and 3 years program presenter:

"I participate in many programs for youth and this is clearly one of the better ones out there."

Louis Tehan, Executive Director UCP of Utica, New York

"They're our main supporter, program-wise and financially. A lot of people will give you a check and leave. These guys are with us. They stay with us. They know the kids. They're just exceptional."

Letty Umidi, Program Director

"We had a passion for kids-especially kids "at risk." We didn't know what we were getting into or how much we would love it. These kids need to know that they can succeed, and they need to know the peace that the water brings."

Allen, a 13 year old participant

"I was so excited about being on the boat that I even went to bed early last night!"

Pete Bollman of Bollman Yacht Sales

"I always recommend to my staff that they examine and consider the advantages for their clients when working with the Tradewinds Foundation."
